Sweet potato is very attractive for dogs, because as the pumpkin it has its natural sweetness.

As you already know, sugar is prohibited for canines. However, what about sweet potato treats? Are they safe for dogs?

Are dehydrated sweet potatoes good for dogs?

Dehydrated sweet potatoes are good for dogs and they are a delicious natural treat. But wait, isn’t it harmful to opt for something sweet?

As we already know, sugar is prohibited for our canines. The dog’s body is much more sensitive than ours, sugar can cause diabetes, obesity and dental problems. Even low sugar intake  can damage the pancreas of our best friend.

For this reason, you should avoid giving sugar to your canine and avoid buying products with high content of sugar.

Let me clarify, honey is a different story as it is natural and unprocessed sweet. Yet, when we want to introduce it as a dog treat, we should be careful with the quantity. Honey is not bad for your pooch, but give it from time to time and in low quantities not as part of the usual diet.

Sweet Potato Benefits for Dogs

The sweet potato is low in fat and rich in vitamin E, this makes it an excellent antioxidant that helps fight cell aging and helps the good care of your dog’s skin and coat.

It is also an excellent source of potassium and iron.

The food and treats with sweet potato as an ingredient are recommended for dogs suffering from diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

If you are looking for number 1 choice for natural healthy dog treats that are vegan and 100% sweet potato, this is my best pick!

Sweeet Potato vs White Potato in Dog Food

Healthy Sweet Potato Dog Treats
Sweet potatoes are good for your puppy

Sweet potatoes and white potatoes are now quite popular as it comes to dog food, especially more expensive types. Are sweet potatoes good for your puppy?

Learn about the pros and cons of these two types of potatoes before choosing which one to feed your pooch.

Choose the best carbohydrate quality. Dogs evolved from wolves and therefore they are carnivores, so they primarily chew and digest meat and bones. However, they live as omnivores and eat different types of meat and plants every day.

Although dogs can eat carbohydrate-rich foods, containing sweet potatoes and white potatoes, they don’t need as many carbohydrates as you may think. However, since carbohydrates are needed to make the food, it can be difficult to find many low carbohydrate starch options when you check the ingredient list. Sweet potatoes and potatoes are considered better quality ingredients than other carbohydrates, such as corn, wheat, and other carbohydrates, which serve as binding agents. If possible, I recommend you to choose natural dog food that contains sweet potatoes instead of the cheaper, normal potatoes.

Pros and cons of sweet potatoes

When choosing between sweet potatoes or white potatoes, opt for a diet that uses sweet potatoes if you can afford it. Sweet potatoes are the most nutritious option from all possible carbohydrate ingredients in dog food. Sweet potatoes have higher levels of antioxidants and vitamins than white potatoes. Sweet potatoes also have a lower glycemic index, which means they don’t have as much sugar as white potatoes and they keep the blood glucose levels of your pooch stable. On the downside, sweet potatoes have a high amount of starch, so your dog can gain weight if they eat  dog food with a high content of sweet potatoes. As usual, I recommend you to pay attention to the ingredients list!

Pros and cons of white potato

White potatoes are cheaper than sweet potatoes and this makes them a common ingredient in dog food. Because white potatoes are less expensive, you may be able to find a good quality grain-free food with potatoes at a better price than those made with sweet potatoes.

White potatoes have a higher glycemic index than sweet potatoes. Therefore, they can cause more blood sugar problems for diabetic dogs. The high carbohydrate level can also contribute to obesity. White potatoes rank behind sweet potatoes for their nutritional value. Finally, some research shows that cooked potatoes can produce a carcinogen called acrylamide. Bear in mind that such a research proves something, but cannot be representative.

Homemade dog food with sweet potatoes and potatoes

Healthy Sweet Potato Dog Treats
Prepare a tasty snack at home

If you prepare your dog’s food at home, or want to give them tasty snacks, I’d recommend that you can use sweet potatoes or white potatoes as ingredients in your recipes, but in moderation. Be sure to follow some basic rules. First of all, never give your dog raw potatoes or sweet potatoes. Potato, plant and leaf skins are toxic to dogs, so be sure to peel the potatoes before cooking them. Since sweet potatoes are more nutritious than white potatoes, many vets and pet nutritionists prefer sweet potatoes as an ingredient in the dog’s diet or as a tasty treat.

As I’ve mentioned the tasty sweet potatoes are high in fiber and they should make only a small percentage of your dog’s diet. It is suggested to limit your dog’s daily fiber to less than 10 % of his diet, so keep that in mind when choosing a packaged dog food or sweet potatoes treats, or opting for homemade recipes.

Homemade recipe with sweet potatoes and fish

Have you noticed how your dog goes crazy every time you cook? Do you know that fish is an excellent source of protein for dogs? This homemade sweet potato and fish dish is not only a wonderful gift for your dog, but it is also very healthy and natural.

Utensils:

  • Knife
  • Saucepan
  • Recipient to bake
  • Aluminum paper
  • Sieve

Ingredients:

  • Water
  • 2 fish fillets
  • 1/2 sweet potato

  • chopped parsley

Steps:

  • Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350 ° F.
  • Step 2. Peel the sweet potato and cut it into cubes. Put the cubes in a bowl of unsalted water and boil for approximately 12 minutes. Check if they are ready by cutting one of the cubes with a knife. If the knife comes out clean, then the potato will be considered ready.

  • Step 4. Remove the water of the sweet potatoes and carefully put them around the two pieces of cod.
  • Step 5. Add 4 tablespoons of sunflower oil on top.
  • Step 6. Place the recipient in the oven and bake for 35 minutes.
  • Step 7. Then turn the fish to be baked on the other side for another 30 minutes. Once it is ready, sprinkle the chopped parsley and sesame seeds.

Warning

Make sure that there are no bones in the fish fillets before letting your dog eat them!
